Today was our final day in Lago Maggiore and having explored Cannobio we wanted to hit the water and explore the lake from there. There are a few tourist boats that do a tour around the lake, stopping at Stresa -the old Maggiore capital, which had served as the base of the first grand tourers in the 19th century- and hopping to the 3 islets that form Isla Borromeo - among the more picturesque sights of the lake, apart from Cannobio.Having woken up late, we unfortunately missed the last boat - which on reflection was not such a bad thing, given its speed (or lack thereof).
As a result we opted for the 2nd alternative of hiring a boat for a few hours. Of course once you set off on the wrong foot your luck does not change easily, so we found out that there were no motoscafi available either. Unless...
There was still the yellow mother-of-all-pedalos available. We can tell a good deal when we see one, so we jumped on it and started pedalling. Gee, it was fun, fast & furious..We couldn't have hoped for more! What more, on the pedalling back, we picked up an exhausted lone young swimming hitch-hiker, Dario. What an adventure!
The remainder of the day was spent strolling, eating pizza, having gellati, strolling, having different flavours of gelati...you get the picture. (by the way, if in Cannobio, treat yourselves to an apperitivo at Dolce & Caffe & you'll get the best and widest variety of munchies).
And now, before it gets too late, we are heading off to the grassy beach to lie down and watch the Perseids meteor shower that is on show tonight!
